WMCore+Cellmate-k9+MM8 keep loosing connection

Hi all,

I have not been using my Batrium system for a couple of years. Yesterday, I connected everything again and hooked it up to a 28S battery system.

First, I installed the latest Watchmon Toolkit software, then updated the firmware on the WMCore and MM8 modules. After that, I checked all settings (including CAN bus settings), and everything appears to be correct, as the system was previously in use.

Unfortunately, I have noticed that quite frequently—every few seconds—the battery graphs for the cells connected to the MM8 modules disappear for a few seconds and then come back. Initially, I thought this might be a CAN bus cable issue, but I have checked everything and it all seems to be OK.

Were you able to figured this out? It sounds like exactly what I’m seeing with my MW5 and MM8’s (x3)

I replaced all of the CAN wiring and the issue continues. The issue persists with even just one (any one) of the MM8’s connected.

Hi Hank, 400bird.

We no longer have MM8s to test with here as they are a legacy product, have you tried an earlier firmware version, e.g. 2.15.11

We generally don’t recommend downgrading, but I’d like to get to the bottom of whether this is a software or hardware issue.

Are you recommending to try just the WM5 or everything (WM5 and MM8)?

Downgrade all devices to keep things consistent - I know it’s a pain but we will know pretty quickly where to look after that.

Well, that seems to have done it. Oddly enough, I’ve not touched the software since 2.17.57 was released and I installed it. This only presented after I powered down the system for a day. When I powered everything back up this issue immediately presented.

I take it back, now the problem effects cells connected to the MW5

I moved the MW5 to a lower supply voltage and the condition continues. The Toolkit intermittently stops receiving updates from the MW5.

I disconnected the MM8’s and the condition continues. Any suggestions?

Hi 400Bird,

Do you need to do a device sync on the WM5 by any chance? It looks like those clusters of cells may be due to the device expecting 14S but getting 12S?

It is set for 14s and connected to 14 cells in series.
When it faults out, most of the cells drop out. It is only coincidence that nearly the same cells are shown in each of my screen shots. It happens about twice in 15 minutes, so I just haven’t caught it at its worst.

The device sync button is greyed out and doesn’t do anything when clicked. If I hit edit, device sync disappears.

Well, I’m out of ideas and about to move on to another solution.

The WM5 has issues and seems to lock up repeatedly, averaging about once every 5 minutes. This in shown both on Watchmon Toolkit and by the data the WM5 puts onto the network (UPD listener) This means I’m not getting reliable cell voltages and current. I doubt the SOC/coulomb counter is working during this time, so SOC will not stay accurate.

I borrowed a WM Core and connected it (with new CAN wiring) to a few different combinations of MM8’s and none of them provided reliable communication/connection. I had initially connected the MM8’s on the old software recommended above. Then I updated them to current to match the WM Core.

No matter what I’ve tried, I can no longer get reliable data from my Batrium BMS
