I have a freedom 4000 inverter(has ethernet plugs)I need to figure a sytem to work with 20 48v chevy volt packs, dont want anything fancy mostly woried for fire protection, dont care about much monitoring, easiest is best, thanks
Hi patdufo,
Thanks for reaching out. From some cursory reading, it sounds like you’ve got 20 of the 12S modules that go into the Volt.
- Each one of those could be monitored with a CellMate K9, and
- these would talk to 1 WatchMonCORE.
- A ShuntMon is optional for NMC chemistry, but recommended
- And Expansion Board can open and close contactors if your pack has them, or cooling loops, or fans, whatever OE equipment those packs have
You would need to wire into each group of 3P cells in the packs.
As for your inverter, I haven’t personally run into that one before, and while it seems to have CAN communication (specifically an RV-C flavour), it’s not clear that this can be used with an external BMS like ours. You can either
- Use our BMS in a “dumb” configuration where we simply give “OK to charge” / “OK to discharge” signals with our relays to your inverter/charger
- Reach out to Xantrex and see if they have a BMS protocol document we can look at (or if they support a CAN BMS at all)
All the best with your project, and let me know if you have any questions
